Men of Zone 16 of the Nigeria Police have arrested the Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State, Amadein Tibiebi, for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

PUNCH Metro gathered that officers are holding Tibiebi, an ex-militant, at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Bayelsa State Police Command, where he is currently undergoing interrogation due to the lack of a detention facility at Zone 16.

Officers arrested him on Tuesday following a November 2021 incident when police arrested one Richard Okon for alleged illegal possession of firearms at a wake-keep at the Koluama community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

In a confessional video, Okon claimed that Tibiebi, whom he worked with, owned the gun he was caught with, although no further action was taken at the time.

A police source revealed that Tibiebi previously responded to a police invitation, allegedly presenting fake licenses and forged documents. However, due to his connections, officers released him.

His current arrest follows a fresh petition to the police on allegations of a threat to life. The source mentioned that Tibiebi had not been deterred by the 2021 incident and had instead boasted about his connections.

Another source at Zone 16 disclosed that Tibiebi, upon arrest, contacted very senior citizens, including senators and top law enforcement officers, in a bid to avoid detention.

“Tibiebi faces investigation for alleged illegal possession of firearms. It is a serious offence, but he has been calling powerful people to avoid consequences,” the source said.

Tibiebi serves as a nephew and chief security officer to Cleopas Moses, a former PDP state chairman who represented Bayelsa Central Senatorial District at the Ninth Senate.

A community source stated, “Tibiebi has boasted about being untouchable by law enforcement officials because of his connections in the PDP and state government.”

On Wednesday, the Zone 16 Public Relations Officer, Emonena Gunn, confirmed the arrest, stating that the matter remains under investigation but provided no further details.
